Abstract
Research in biological sensors for healthcare applications has grown exponentially, driven by the recent advances in IoT and microtechnology. However, a noticeable gap remains in the availability of commercialized wearable systems for painless, unobtrusive biomonitoring experiences. This master's thesis presents the iterative development of a smartwatch prototype - the BioWatch - for implementing non-invasive and discreet wearable biosensors. The BioWatch's connectivity allows biosensor module integration and wireless connection to stand-alone sensor systems. A sweat glucose biosensor and a microneedle lactate biosensor are developed for the BioWatch. Three continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) users tested the BioWatch. All would rather wear a smartwatch-like CGM similar to the BioWatch than their current CGM. The results of this research work advocate a comprehensive design methodology, emphasizing technical performance, user experience, and medical relevance as the foundation for developing future discreet and pain-free biomonitoring systems. The proof-of-concept presented contributes to developing wearable platforms for non-invasive biomarker monitoring. Integrating biosensors into smartwatches can drastically improve the daily lives of chronically ill patients and the general population healthcare.
